As wildfires rage through California and PG&E cuts power to millions of people, we’re bringing together communities that have been unfairly burdened with the impacts of a dirty, dangerous energy system to demand a safe, reliable, community-and-worker-owned energy system that benefits all Californians, especially the people most harmed by PG&E and California’s other for-profit investor-owned utility monopolies, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric and SoCal Gas.

TOMORROW, tell the California Public Utilities Com TOMORROW, tell the California Public Utilities Commission: don’t abandon disabled community members in the next disaster!

For-profit utilities are cutting a life-saving battery program for people who need oxygen and other devices to stay alive during a power outage.

*BACKGROUND*

The CPUC recently decided that the program, Disability Disaster Access and Resources (DDAR), is unnecessary because another service delivers much smaller batteries insufficient to power an oxygen machine or wheelchair.

Southern California Edison already defunded the DDAR program as a result – leaving power-dependent people with disabilities and older adults throughout Southern California without a safeguard during emergencies when the power goes out.

Energy is a human right. It’s a matter of life and death. Join us tomorrow to fight for our relatives who need power to live.

Tell the CPUC: don’t leave disabled people to die in the next outage! Restore DDAR funding now!
The Reclaim Our Power Coalition came together for The Reclaim Our Power Coalition came together for an inspiring day of community, strategy, and artmaking last month at our annual coalition gathering – art build edition! 🎨❤️‍🔥

Thanks to all of our members who joined us and brought their vision and passion for building a People’s Utility and reshaping our energy future. We spent the day connecting, strengthening our relationships, sharing delicious food, discussing goals and tactics for the year ahead, and creating some beautiful art for our statewide campaign.

Special thanks to our comrade David Solnit for his generosity, hospitality, creativity and solidarity in hosting us at Bridge Storage Arts and Events and leading us in an amazing art build! We are so grateful for his support in infusing art and culture into our movement-building work.

Utility justice and decolonization were on center stage this Sunday. Bad Bunny spotlighted the extreme energy crisis fueled by disaster capitalism that Puerto Rico has been suffering since Hurricane Maria destroyed the power grid, which was subsequently privatized. Millions were left without power for months, causing thousands of deaths, and the island still faces frequent blackouts from a crumbling, centralized grid designed to maximize profit, greed and extraction, not serve the people.

But the people of Puerto Rico have been resisting privatization and reclaiming their energy future. We’re so inspired by the innovative work of @casapuebloorg to create a decentralized network of interconnected solar microgrids to support each other, share energy during emergencies, and create a more resilient energy system from the ground up – dramatically reducing energy bills and eliminating blackouts by bringing power generation directly to communities. (See the video on the last slide for more info!)

We’re also painfully aware that as we’ve been talking about Bad Bunny’s performance, the US empire is denying energy to the people of Cuba through a criminal blockade, and the island is now experiencing life-threatening blackouts and critical power shortages similar to those that Puerto Rico has experienced.

Energy is a human right and a public good. It’s a matter of life and death. It should never be left in private hands. We hope that millions of people were awoken by Bad Bunny’s message. And we know that our role as organizers is to move them farther along their politicization journey — towards becoming active, committed members of the movement for energy democracy and collective liberation.
